About Caregiver Coaching

Faculty

The Caregiver Coaching project is overseen by Dr. Stephanie Gerow, a board-certified behavior analyst (BCBA) and assistant professor in the Baylor School of Education’s Department of Educational Psychology.

She is passionate about supporting families of children with autism, which led her to develop this project. She leads the project team, which includes faculty and graduate students in the field of applied behavior analysis.

Three additional faculty, Dr. Tonya Davis, Kristen Padilla-Mainor, and Dr. Jessica Akers, support this project. They are each board-certified behavior analysts (BCBAs). They conduct research and teach classes at Baylor University related to evidence-based practices for children with autism and other developmental disabilities.

LEAD THERAPISTS

Our lead therapists are postdoctoral researchers and doctoral students in the Educational Psychology Department at Baylor University School of Education. They each have their BCBA certification and have experience working with children with autism and other developmental disabilities.

Catharine Lory

Dr. Catharine Lory, BCBA-D, LBA, is the lead supervisor of Baylor’s Caregiver Coaching team. Dr. Lory received a doctorate in the area of Special Education from Purdue University. She has worked with people with significant support needs in schools, clinics, community organizations, and at home. Her work focuses on training professionals to support the needs of children and adults with autism.

Kristina McGinnis

Kristina McGinnis, BCBA, LBA, is a supervisor on Baylor’s Caregiver Coaching team. Kristina is currently pursuing her doctorate at Baylor. She taught in a self-contained setting for six years and has over 10 years of experience supporting individuals with autism and their families in homes, schools, and clinics. Her favorite part of working on this project is seeing the powerful connections coaches make with the families they serve.

THERAPISTS

Our therapists are master’s students in the applied behavior analysis program at Baylor University. They are each completing coursework and supervised experiences. Each of our therapists is supervised by a lead therapist, who is a BCBA.

Renming Liu

Renming Liu is a caregiver coach on Baylor's Caregiver coaching team. She is a doctoral student in Baylor's Applied Behavior Analysis program. Renming enjoys supporting caregivers to implement interventions and teaching their children with autism to learn daily living, pre-academic, communication, and social skills.

Remington Swensson

FUNDING

In 2018, Baylor School of Education was awarded a $278,000 grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) to conduct research and provide support to families of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Then Baylor School of Education received a second grant of $212,400 from THECB that allows the SOE’s trained therapists to work with additional parents and families through 2020.

A third award of $369,699 from THECB provided further funding, through May of 2023, to work with more families and answer different research questions.

RESEARCH

The research conducted through this project will provide information to the field to improve the quality of services delivered to children with ASD. The research is currently underway. Information about published research will be posted here.
