Teacher Education Program:

Baylor’s field-based undergraduate teacher-education program produces graduates who become leaders in education, whether in classroom teaching or administrative roles.

TEA Pass Rate:

Recent certification exam pass rates for Moody School of Education students are listed below. All percentages reflect the pass rates for all programs at Baylor University requiring TEA certification, whether undergraduate or graduate programs and whether housed in the School of Education or in other academic units.

The first number indicates pass rate for the PPR (Pedagogy and Professional Responsibility) exam, which is taken by candidates seeking initial certification. The second percentage includes all content and supplemental exams that candidates took for initial teacher certification. It also includes exams taken for principal or superintendent certification.

Award-winning field program:

Baylor School of Education is the only university to be honored back-to-back by the National Association of Professional Development Schools (NAPDS) with the "Exemplary Professional Development School Achievement Award for its two partnerships with local school districts. Baylor students conduct field work in Midway and Waco ISDs under the leadership of Baylor-trained mentor teachers with on-site supervision from Baylor SOE faculty, a Baylor University Liaison, and a school-based Site Coordinator.

Results may be filtered by graduate or undergraduate, academic unit, and major to see SOE grads. The data for 2023-24 academic year showed a success rate of 100% for SOE undergraduates in teacher-education* programs. This exceeds Baylor's overall placement rate for undergraduates.

Several graduate programs also show a 100% success rate.

*The SOE overall undergraduate rate includes students in a non-teacher-education program.


Graduate Education:

Baylor Graduate School’s annual evaluation of graduate education has consistently found that School of Education programs are highly productive academically and that graduates are satisfied with their education.

Research Publications by PhD Students:

Educational Leadership doctoral students in the Higher Education Studies & Leadership (HESL) PhD program ranked top in the university in annual research publications per capita. Doctoral graduates of Curriculum & Instruction rank among the most satisfied at Baylor, with a 4.7 out of five, tying for second place.

Academic Analytics Rankings of Faculty for 2021

Baylor Graduate School's Annual Report calculates citations, awards, and grant dollars of every graduate faculty member in PhD programs.

• HESL faculty have the university’s highest ranking of Academic Analytics, with 100 percentile.
• Educational Psychology PhD faculty ranked at 85 percentile. And Curriculum & Instruction at 64.


Program Growth:

Launched in 2018, the EdD Online in Learning & Organizational Change in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction is the university’s largest doctoral program. Its inaugural cohort graduated in August 2021. With 84% of students graduating within three years, the cohort beat the national doctoral completion rate, which is 50% after 10 years. The EDD-LOC was a 2022 winner of the Program of the Year Award from CPED, the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate, which noted the program's innovation, social justice pursuits, diversity of faculty and students, and preparation of scholarly practitioners to lead change initiatives that promote equity.

The MA in School Leadership graduated its first cohort in December 2022 with a 100% completion rate for the cohort and 100% placement rate.

The SOE also launched an EdS program in School Psychology located in Dallas at the campus of the Baylor School of Nursing. Its first cohort graduated in May of 2023.

Award-Winning Graduate Students:

  • Lianne Jones, PhD ’24 in Curriculum and Teaching, received the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the School Science and Mathematics Association (SSMA).
  • A team of doctoral candidates in School Psychology earned the Top Student Poster Award at the American Psychological Association's 2025 annual convention. Cameron Blaies, Allison Eisenhut, Ellen Grimes, Ivana Lozano, and Scarlett Mitchell created a poster in collaboration with the ASD4ASD research team (Baylor + University of Houston). The team reviewed 42 studies on testing accommodations for learners with autism. They found that time- and environment-based supports are most common, yet research (especially in PK–12 settings) rarely uses quantitative methods to evaluate effectiveness.
  • Celeste D.C. Sodergren, PhD ’24, in PhD in Educational Psychology with a specialization in Gifted and Talented Education, received the 2025 National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) Dissertation Award. The prestigious honor recognizes the most outstanding dissertation in the field of gifted education, drawing submissions from across the U.S. and internationally.
  • Tina Chung, PhD student in Curriculum and Teaching in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction, received the 2025 Louise M. Berman Fellows Award from Kappa Delta Pi.
  • Liz Harrelson Magill, PhD ’25, received Baylor’s Outstanding Dissertation Award for the social sciences in spring 2025 for her work studying a curricular framework in social studies classrooms. Her dissertation is titled “Problematizing the Present and Possibilizing the Future: Designing a Critical Historiography ‘History of the Present’ Framework for Social Studies Education.”
  • Renming Liu, doctoral candidate in Educational Psychology and student fellow of the Baylor Center for Disability and Flourishing, received the 2025 John Umbreit Doctoral Research Award for the Division for Emotional and Behavioral Health of the Council for Exceptional Children.
  • Beatrice Ruiz, PhD candidate in educational psychology, received Baylor’s Outstanding Graduate Research Award for the social sciences for 2023-24.
  • Liz Harrelson Magill, PhD ’25, received Baylor’s Outstanding Graduate Instructor Award for a course she taught in the spring of 2024. She completed her PhD in Curriculum and Teaching in May 2025.
  • Maggie Bryant, PhD candidate in the Department Curriculum & Instruction, received Baylor’s Outstanding Graduate Instructor Award for a course she taught in the fall of 2023.
  • Melissa Donham, MA ’19, PhD ’23, received the 2023 Dissertation Award from the School Science and Mathematics Association (SSMA), a national organization. Donham is an assistant professor at Sam Houston State University. Her award-winning dissertation was titled “Opening Mathematics: A Multiple Case Study Exploring Algebra I Teachers’ Selection and Implementation of Open Tasks.”
  • Annmarie Crum, EdD ’22, was awarded Baylor’s Outstanding Dissertation Award for her work exploring inequities in STEM education. Her dissertation is titled, ​​“An Intersectional Exploration of the STEM-Related Expectancy-Value Beliefs of Young Women of Color: A Comparative Case Study.”
  • Alicia Briancon, EdD ’23, an instructor at College of Southern Nevada (CSN), a community college in Clark County, Nevada, received the Outstanding Research Paper Award for the Southeastern Universities Graduate Research Symposium (SUGRS).
  • Maryann Hebda and Nori Ryland, both PhD Candidates in the Department of Educational Psychology, each received the Outstanding Student Instructor Award from the Baylor Graduate School for their teaching during the spring of 2022.
  • Jennifer Gonzales, EdD ’22, received the Dissertation Award from the national School Science and Mathematics Association (SSMA).
  • Nate Scholton, PhD candidate in Curriculum and Teaching in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction, received the Baylor Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award.
  • Heather Williams, 2021 National Outstanding Assistant Principal (one of only 24) for the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and 2021 Arkansas Elementary School Assistant Principal of the Year for the Arkansas Association of Educational Administrators (doctoral student, EdD in K12 Educational Leadership)
  • Brandon Parker, 2020 Texas Association of School Psychology (TASP) Outstanding Graduate Doctoral Student Award (PhD candidate in School Psychology, Dept. of Educational Psychology)
  • Lori Leibowitz, 2020 Gifted Coordinator of the Year Award from the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) (student in EdD Online in Learning and Organizational Change, Dept. of Curriculum & Instruction)
  • Marie Kirkpatrick, Council for Exceptional Childen (CEC) Division for Research Doctoral Student Scholars and Organization for Autism Research (OAR) doctoral dissertation grant (PhD candidate Educational Psychology)
  • Maryann Hebda, 2020 Non-Doctoral Research Award from National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) (PhD student, Department of Educational Psychology)
  • Ryann Shelton, 2020 School Science and Mathematics Association (SSMA) Dissertation Award (PhD candidate in Curriculum & Instruction)
  • Dr. Jeff Strietzel and Dr. Ryan Erck, both 2020 Baylor SOE PhD graduates in Higher Education and Leadership Studies, received the “Best Overall Paper” award at the annual Leading Change Conference of James Madison University’s School of Strategic Leadership Studies, in spring of 2021. Their paper was titled “Through the Fire: Using Derailment Research to Lead Change in the COVID-19 Era” and focused on best practices for leading change, drawing on Strietzel’s dissertation research data.
